The Death of Jesus

Mark 15:37-39 (NASB):

“And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God!'”

*Note – Here is a short explanation of the curtain that is spoken about in verse 38.
A heavy veil hung in front of the room in the Temple called “The Holy of Holies,” a place reserved by God for Himself; the veil separated Him from sinful mankind. Now this veil was split from above, showing that Christ’s death for man’s sin had opened up access to the holy God.

The Living Bible shows verse 39 this way:

“When the Roman officer standing beside his cross saw how he dismissed his spirit, he exclaimed, ‘Truly, this was the Son of God!'”

I have to wonder, what exactly did the Centurion see that left him no doubt that Jesus was indeed the Son of God? Was there something significant that wasn’t actually mentioned in the scriptures, but was so powerful that it made him know beyond the shadow of a doubt whom Jesus really was?

I also wonder what was going through his mind after he realized who was just crucified. I think I would have been just a tad on the frightened side!

When you read the whole chapter of Mark 15 and you see how much they tormented and mocked Christ, it gives you a deeper appreciation of the sacrifice that He made for us. He was sinless. He didn’t have to do this, but He did, simply because He loved us so much.

Thank you Jesus! ♥
