Homestead Tales – Vol. 1

It’s been a while since I’ve written a personal blog post, so I thought I would take a few minutes to catch everyone up on what’s happening around the Close homestead these days.

First and foremost, I think Derek and I are *finally* over that terrible flu that we had. The first two weeks were downright awful, the third week was a little better – but we still had an icky cough, and now that we are in the fourth week, we are both back to feeling pretty normal. Yay!!!

Mama and Daddy have moved over here to the property, and are no longer in a campground. Woo hoo! We had some RV hookups put in for their fifth-wheel until we can get the garage converted into an apartment for them. I’m so happy to finally have them here, and set up.  It’s fun to be able to putter around and do projects with them, to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine during the day, and (soon) the fire pit out back at night.

Speaking of projects, Daddy and I spent the weekend getting our chicken coop started. We got the floor in, and the walls and roof framed up. It’s looking pretty good, if I do say so myself! I have to admit, it was fun to break out my power tools and put them to use. (insert the Tim Taylor grunts here) Measuring, marking, and cutting the lumber … it was like a giant craft project for me. lol I love the smell of fresh cut lumber! I did get a bit too much sun, so my face and arms are a little burned, but such is the life of a red-head, eh?

The coop itself is about 8’x8′ square, with a nice pitch on the roof so the snow will slide off in the winter. Hopefully we can get the walls done this week, but it is supposed to start raining at the end of the week, so we will see. I can’t wait to get our little chicken flock going; having a supply of fresh eggs for all of us will be wonderful!

Mama and I have been doing some communal shopping. Buying in bulk, splitting things up, then getting things like meat and veggies portioned out into freezer bags. It’s so nice to be able to work together in the kitchen, and pop in and out of each others homes for coffee, and to visit together when Mama comes over to do their laundry.

Derek is getting close to being done with his next music project; he’s hoping to be able to release the CD this summer. He hooked up with a great young vocalist who has been a breath of fresh air for him. Needless to say, he’s excited! lol I love that he still puts so much time and effort into creating music, since it is one of his greatest passions. I also love that while I am out tinkering in the yard, he can go into his studio to work on his music. It’s a win-win for both of us. ♥

The lilac bushes I planted along the back fence line three years ago when we bought the house are blooming this year. They are still small, but all of the starts I planted “took” and are growing well, except for one. One out of ten isn’t bad! Here in a few more years, we should have some nice, thick lilac bushes. I planted both purple and white, and alternated them when I planted, so it should be really lovely when they are full grown. Every time I look at them, it reminds me of my friend Pat, who gave me the starts. Thanks, Pat!

After we get the chicken coop finished, we will get started on the raised bed garden we are making.  We are thinking about repurposing some pallets that Daddy picked up to make the planters. (great idea, Mama!) It will be a smaller garden this year, but once we figure out what all we want to grow, we will expand it.

Well, I think that is about all the news I have for now.  We are all just enjoying the beautiful weather, and getting ready for summer. I hope you are, too!

We are all enjoying this, especially Daddy. He loves building the Coop, with you. It’s especially nice knowing we can shop in each other’s pantry when we run out of something without having to run to the store. LOL Love you, Baby,

Yeah, he keeps telling me he is going to make a carpenter out of me, yet. LOL! And yes, pantry shopping is nice, too. Love you! ♥
