Camping in front of WalMart? Really?

Ok, so I just had to blog about this.

Our town just opened its first Super WalMart today. Yes, I did say its first. Crazy I am sure, for some of you to think about, but we live in a rural area and this is “big news” around here. Yikes. Here’s the thing that gets me about it though; there were actually people *camping* outside of the store for the grand opening this morning. Really?

I was just reading an article from one of our local news sources, and here is what it said:

“The anticipation for some folks was pretty high as there were just over 100 people waiting in line for the grand opening.

The group included five young men who camped outside the doors overnight. They’re all related and their goal was to make the first purchase in the new Super WalMart.

They were the first in line through the doors this morning and immediately rushed to the first cash register and purchased a Chocolate Bar, and gave the first dollar to the cashier, after which they all signed the dollar and gave it to Keyes. [the store manager]

He said the dollar will be framed and put on display.”

Ok, now there are a few things wrong with this picture.

Let’s start with the fact that 5 guys/relatives camped outside of WalMart, just so they could spend the first dollar there. This is a huge accomplishment because … ? What was the “payout” for them? I am curious to know what other types of family fun they come up with.

Secondly, over 100 people waiting in line for the doors to open. Why on earth would you want to do that, when it has been raining for two days? Why not just wait until it is open for a couple of hours, and scoot your dry little body right through the doors without the worry of someone trampling your feet and being caught in the body crush of a bunch of wet strangers? Seems more logical to me. And much more hygenic.

Lastly, it’s not like you are waiting in line for a 100-ticket only, private performance by Charlie Daniels playing “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” on his trusty old fiddle, complete with a sit-down Q & A with Charlie himself afterwards.

It’s WalMart.
Discount shopping.
Open 24 hours a day.
7 Days a week.
With smiley faces everywhere.
*sigh*

I’m certainly not judging anyone. If you were there, and that’s your thing, great! Personally, I just don’t get it.

Confused by hard-core shoppers,
